A Greek beach, at night
We were on holiday in Zakynthos. The first few days had been gloriously sunny, but on the 10th of August we had a thunder storm. The streets flooded, and everywhere was deserted. By the evening it had cleared up and was warm again. After dinner we walked down to the beach. It was far enough away from the town that it was completely dark, letting us see the stars and the full moon. The storm had moved to the next island and we sat on the sand to watch the lightning strike. After a while he pulled me to my feet and made me dance with him. I sang ‘dream a little dream’ and we waltzed badly, laughing and falling. He whispered in my ear that he wanted to do this forever, then got down on one knee and produced a ring. He asked me to marry him. I was so shocked I knelt down with him! I said yes, we held each other, laughed and smiled. Three years on and I remember every second of it and I’ll never forget it.
